There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that contains a number of luxuries aside from the casino, which houses 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
