There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling hall, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel complex that contains many conveniences aside from the gambling den, which contains ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
